Speed Kills (NOT!)

Proponents of the myth that "speed kills" often point out that accidents declined after the Federally-mandated 55 MPH speed limit was implemented. What they forgot to tell you was that:

1) The accident rate, per 100 million vehicle miles, was declining even faster before "55" was introduced. In other words, "55" slowed the decline!

2) The accident rate also declined by the same amount on roads where the limit was already 55 or less, such as in the City of St. Louis. The same effect was noted in California. Thus, "55" was demonstrably eliminated as a factor.
